Ask a Cop: How can I dispose of old guns?

Sgt. Chris Yagelski

Q: My grandfather recently had passed away and my wife and I went through his basement and attic. During our search we found a very large amount of .22 shells and two .22 handguns that are very old and look dangerous. Where and how can I get rid of them?

A: You may sell or give away the handguns or visit a gun dealer to see if they might be of value. You also may drop off any old or unwanted ammunition or handguns to the Michigan City Police station front desk in care of me, Sgt. Chris Yagelski, and I will ensure the guns and ammunition are destroyed properly.
