Round 2 winners of the recent Barker Middle School STEM Fair were, from left, Alex Mallon, MJ Sardon, Lucy Murphy, Donovan Joseph and Ryan Fisher. STEM Coordinator Amy Hamman said as part of the goal as a STEM school, every student at Barker was required to complete a project for Round 1, which was conducted in the Science classes of Joyce Murphy, Charles Krueger and Val Mecklenburg. Twenty students then qualified for Round 2.

Barker student Wyatt Debald goes over his project with judges. Winning projects were “What is the dirtiest surface in Barker?” by Donovan Joseph, 3rd; “How do braces affect the amount of bacteria in your mouth?” by Lucy Murphy, 2nd; and “How will changing the weight of the counterweight affect how far the projectile can be shot?” by MJ Sardon, 1st. the Creative Research Award went to “What is Hydroponics?” by Ryan Fisher; and the grand champion was “How much lead is in local waters?” by Alex Mallon. The judges were Maria Surma and Bruce Starek, retired Barker Science teachers.
