MICHIGAN CITY — A former downtown church, theater and event center with more than 150 years of history will soon be embarking on its next chapter.

On Friday, the public got a first peek inside Uptown Social, a new wedding venue, concert hall and event center at the intersection of Franklin and 9th streets in Michigan City.

A joy to see this former church so beautifully rehabbed!! I do want to correct its identity. At one point in time (the early 1900's ) it was St John's Evangelical Lutheran Church. Both of my paternal grandparents grew up in this church as did my dad and aunts. However, in 1936, it became St Johns Evangelical and Reformed Church which represented a departure from its Lutheran roots. I was baptized there in 1949. Then, in 1957, it became St. John's United Church of Christ through the union of the E & R Synod and the Congregational Christian Church. A new building was built on S Franklin and the congreation moved to that location in 1967, where I was ordained in 1976. The Rev. Lark J. Hapke
