WALKERTON — A driver killed in a head-on crash on U.S. 6 on Friday, which also left a man and 2-year-old child injured, has been identified as a Grovertown woman.

La Porte County Sheriff’s deputies responded just before noon Friday to reports of a head-on collision in the 8200 East block of U.S. 6, just west of Walkerton.

They found a Dodge Ram pickup and a Toyota Rav-4 had crashed, and the operator of the SUV was deceased, a statement from the Sheriff’s Office said.

The victim was identified Tuesday as 29-year-old Taren Abair of Grovertown, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies also found a 2-year-old child with minor injuries secured within a child safety seat in the SUV. The child was taken by ambulance to South Bend Memorial Hospital, police said.

The driver of the Ram, identified as 60-year-old John Niego of Michigan City, was flown to South Bend Memorial due to injuries sustained from the crash, police said.

The exact cause of the crash has not been finalized, but investigation showed the eastbound pickup sideswiped a semi tractor-trailer prior to the collision with the westbound SUV, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

The La Porte County Fatal Accident & Crash Team is investigating, and no further details were released.
