Ever since the death of La Porte High School junior Jake West in 2013, his mother, Julie West, has tried to raise awareness of sudden cardiac arrest, and legislation now awaiting the governor’s signature will help get the information out.

INDIANAPOLIS — A bill to increase the availability of information on sudden cardiac arrest of students has passed the General Assembly, thanks to two local legislators and a woman who lost her son to the condition.

House Enrolled Act 1040, authored by state Rep. Jim Pressel, R-Rolling Prairie, and sponsored by state Sen. Mike Bohacek, R-Michiana Shores, would help lessen the possibility of SCA in students by making information about the issue more widely accessible to all school staff, the two legislators said.
