NIPSCO Michigan City plant

NIPSCO has announced plans to close the five coal ash ponds at its Michigan City generating plant, part of its plan to close the facility along with all its coal-burning plants.

MICHIGAN CITY — While Indiana’s shift from coal-generated electricity to new technologies will be beneficial to the environment, it will have major impacts on affected communities, including Michigan City.

These include a reduction in local tax revenues, potential unwanted uses of local land, and job losses in traditional fossil fuel-based industries. The job losses could also accelerate potential population changes.
