Archon Garner, 29, battled mental illness his whole life before committing suicide while in Indiana Department of Correction custody in 2020, according to a lawsuit filed on behalf of his mother, a Michigan City resident.

MICHIGAN CITY — A Michigan City woman has filed a federal lawsuit against the Indiana Department of Correction, claiming prison and medical staff abandoned her mentally ill son, resulting in his death by suicide in 2020.

Archon Garner, 29, or “Shawnie” as he was known, was described by family as funny, kind-hearted and loving, especially to his young nieces, according to Vanessa del Valle, attorney for the MacArthur Justice Center and clinical associate professor of law at Northwestern University.
