La Porte’s lakes have always been an important part of La Porte’s history – it being known as the City of Lakes. They have served and still do serve many activities.

One of the winter activities that the lakes offered in early days was a large ice industry. A lot of ice was cut from the lakes and shipped out to various locations.

Fern Eddy Schultz is the La Porte County Historian.
