Hikers to look for butterflies at Burns Prairie

GALIEN, Mich. — The Harbor Country Hikers will check out a new trail at the Burns Prairie Preserve on its next hike on Saturday at noon (CDT). The trail cuts through an established butterfly habitat. Hikers president Pat Fisher will lead the hike through the 38-acre preserve in Galien, Michigan. The preserve includes prairie, wetlands and woodlands; and boasts an abundance of summer-blooming wildflowers.

The Hikers recommend long pants, hat, sturdy shoes or boots, water and insect repellent for the hike. HCH observes social distancing and the use of face masks is required for those who join the hikes. For directions and information, visit harborcountryhikers.com. Although the Hikers encourages membership, hikes are open to all.

Report turkey hens and young to DNR

INDIANAPOLIS — Volunteers can help IDNR learn more about Indiana’s wild turkey populations by reporting turkey broods through Aug. 31. Each summer, wildlife biologists and volunteers conduct brood surveys, counting the number of young wild turkeys observed with turkey hens to estimate how many young turkeys live through the summer.

This year, DNR aims to collect 3,000 brood observation reports across the state with a goal of at least 25 per county. Individuals interested in participating can register and report turkeys at on.IN.gov/turkeybrood. Instructions for the survey and an illustrative guide on how to report observations is provided on the site, as are the results of the previous summers’ brood survey.

Seek public feedback on state parks

INDIANAPOLIS — Indiana State Parks have created a new comment card that lets users share thoughts about service, hospitality and facilities. The team has a renewed focus on service and hospitality using an internally developed program called “Service State Park Style” that focuses on hospitality as you camp, stay at an inn or spend a day outdoors in a state park.

New printed comment cards are available in park offices, nature centers and other public buildings to share your thoughts about state park service, hospitality and facilities. The comment card is also available for easy completion online at stateparks.IN.gov. Anyone who completes and submits a printed or online comment card with contact information will be entered in a drawing for a 2021 annual pass.
