It is well past time that the city fathers take whatever steps are necessary to bring lifeguards back to the beach at Washington Park.

On Saturday night, on the eve of Father’s Day, an 11-year-old girl drowned. Last week, it was a 28-year-old man. As I type this, emergency responders are being dispatched to Michigan City’s lakefront for a possible drowning; early reports are there may be multiple victims.

Michael Kellems was a longtime La Porte County Sheriff’s deputy and captain who has served the citizens of La Porte County for 35 years. He is also a certified lifeguard.
