UNION MILLS — A box trailer reportedly stolen from a storage facility in Valparaiso was later found overturned on the side of a roadway in Union Mills on Sunday.

According to a report from the La Porte County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were dispatched to the area of CR-600W and U.S. 6 at 8:58 a.m. after a trailer was spotted lying on its side in the shoulder of the roadway.

The report said deputies made contact with the vehicle’s owner, who said the trailer was in storage at Keys Storage in Valparaiso, and must have been stolen.

The owner later visited the storage facility with Porter County Sheriff’s deputies and determined his trailer had in fact been taken, the report said.

In Union Mills, deputies found the back door to the trailer open, with several boxes of miscellaneous items and a Santa lawn ornament inside, the report said.

Damage, limited mainly to scratches and scuffs, was found on the front lower left of the frame of the trailer. The extended wheel well was also bent.

The vehicle was towed from the scene by John’s Garage, and further investigation is being handled by the Porter County Sheriff’s Office.
