Separate crashes on I-94 cause injuries, large paint and fuel spills

Two separate crashes on I-94 in Lake County left motorists at a standstill for a long period on Tuesday morning. About 1:30 a.m., Indiana State Police troopers were dispatched to a two-vehicle crash on I-94 eastbound at the 15 mile-marker. Investigation showed a 2015 Dodge Dart was eastbound at a high rate of speed when it rear-ended a 2014 Toyota Camry in the right lane. The impact caused the Toyota to spin and come to a rest in the left lane, while the Dodge continued into the median wall before stopping in the right lane. Debris was scattered across the entire roadway and all three lanes were closed for emergency responders to treat the injured. As the crash was being investigated, at 2 a.m., another crash occurred at the 14.8 mile-marker. A 2016 Volvo semi had rear-ended a FedEx truck pulling two semi-trailers, according to ISP. Preliminary investigation shows that the driver of the FedEx vehicle was slowing in the traffic backup when it was rear-ended by the Volvo. This impact resulted in a large amount of paint and diesel fuel to spill onto the roadway. The driver of the Volvo was trapped inside the and had to be extricated by the Lake Station Fire Department. The driver was flown to a trauma hospital in Illinois. As a result of the second crash, all lanes of I-94 were closed for 12 hours for cleanup, which included removing the spilled paint from the roadway. One lane of traffic was able to go around on the inside shoulder. Details on the injuries have not been released.
