To repair storm damage at the lighthouse in Michigan City, the keeper used a breeches buoy to reach the light on Dec. 8, 1913. A breeches buoy is a rope-based rescue device used to extract people from wrecked vessels, or to transfer people from one place to another in dangerous situations, similar to a zip line.
