Photo shows an interurban train in Michigan City. La Porte Mayor Lemuel Darrow, first elected in 1898, was a visionary who recognized that tourism could be very important for La Porte County. While on board of interurban railroad, he successfully secured the creation of a rail line from South Bend through La Porte to Michigan City, and then on to Chicago.
