Remember When

Pilots Walter F. Behrndt and Frank R. Kemp are pictured here on July 4, 1920, with a Curtiss biplane in a field close to the current La Porte Airport. Kemp was the first La Porte citizen to own his own plane. Behrndt and Kemp were also the first to use the airfield which later became the Michigan City Airport. They flew passengers at the rate of $1 per minute or $15 per ride. Kemp was involved in five crashes, but survived all.
