Blue Chip helps CCH feed the homeless

Citizens Concerned for the Homeless has been operating local food rescue efforts for over a year with distributions all over the county in a structured protocol coordinated with the federal government (Feeding America) and Food Bank of Northern Indiana. COVID-19 changed many things, such as closures of local restaurants. When Blue Chip Casino Hotel and Spa suspended operations, management decided food for their restaurants would be donated. With coordination through the United Way of La Porte County, CCH received a call from Blue Chip’s John Santangelo, who wanted to get the food to the people. With its Food Rescue Initiative and Truck (purchased through funding by the Healthcare Foundation of La Porte and Duneland Health Council), five different pickups were completed, filling the 15-foot refrigeration truck. In excess of 14,000 pounds of food was then delivered to local and county soup kitchens, food pantries, shelters and other points of direct delivery. If any restaurant, group or organization wishes to contribute food to battle food insecurity, call Jim Musial at 219-879-2552.
