The original $8.8 million plan for a plaza would have closed 7th Street between Franklin and Washington to create greenspace and include amenities including public art, a splash pad, temporary skating rink, benches, children’s play area, outdoor café and multi-use building with an elevated, outdoor stage.

MICHIGAN CITY — After a plan for an $8.8 million downtown plaza was put on hold more than three years ago, the proposed site at 7th and Franklin streets has remained vacant, though not unused.

And the Michigan City Mainstreet Association wants to keep it that way, with improvements.
