MICHIGAN CITY — There have been at least 26 drownings in Lake Michigan so far this year, but not one in Michigan City, and a beach safety program Thursday in Washington Park was designed to keep it that way.

“We need a three-pronged approach to beach safety,” according to Dave Benjamin of the Great Lakes Surf Rescue Project. “Safer water, safer swimmers and safer response.”
