During the Great Hunger (potato famine) in Ireland in 1848, the British Parliament argued over corn laws and taxes — how to give corn to the starving Irish and still collect taxes? When the plight of the Irish was discussed, the cry was “They’re starving to death.” But one MP was heard to say, “Not fast enough.”
