Mary Elaine Schultz, 85, of Michigan City passed away on Wednesday, June 10, 2020, at Aperion Care Arbors in Michigan City.

Born on Sept. 8, 1934, in Michigan City, Mary was a 1952 graduate of St. Mary’s High School. She went on to attend Central Piedmont Community College in Charlotte, North Carolina. On May 29, 1954, Mary married Gerald Schultz, who survives in Michigan City.

Mary is survived by sons, Robert (Jan) Schultz of Grand Beach, Michigan, and James (Christopher Miller and Priscilla Miller) Schultz of Coral Springs, Florida; and daughter, Susan Vissing of Michigan City, Indiana. Also surviving are grandchildren, R. Blake (Stephanie Clouzet) Vissing and Sarah (Lazaro) Marrero; and great-grandchildren, Levi and Brennan Vissing. Mary was preceded in death by her mother, Mabel Bond (Milcarek).

In addition to Michigan City, Mary spent time living in Charlotte, North Carolina; Santa Barbara, California; La Porte, Indiana; and Davie, Florida.

Mary was a longtime volunteer at the Girlfriend Sale in Long Beach and was well known by sale attendees for her Monkey Bread. She was creative and artistic, regularly making Halloween costumes for her children. Mary was a dedicated homemaker, both inside and out. She was a talented seamstress and also loved working outdoors on gardening and landscaping. Fond of nature and animals, she was an avid birdwatcher and loved riding her horse when she was growing up.

She remained active over the years, participating in bowling and golf leagues, volunteering as a nursing assistant at her kids’ school, and served as a Brownie Leader. She never hesitated to buy what a child was selling in order to support a good cause.

Mary loved traveling. She toured Europe, crossed off a bucket list item late in life with a girls’ trip to the western United States that featured a hot air balloon ride, and loved spending a week with family in the Outer Banks of North Carolina.

She was a mom and grandma to many others who were fortunate enough to cross her path.

A private service will be held at a later date at Greenwood Cemetery. Cremation arrangements have been entrusted to Geisen-Carlisle Funeral Home, 613 Washington St., Michigan City.
