It has now been a month since the rains that flooded much of the Kankakee River lowlands. Thousands of those acres are still flooded. It may be the worst flooding ever here and everyone knows why.

Rightly or wrongly, over 500,000 acres of marshes and swamps were drained and a slowly meandering 250 mile river was turned into a 90 mile drainage ditch. In a basin made up almost entirely of sand, that is a recipe for disaster.
