First of all, I am so sorry that I will not be able to attend Blaine’s funeral. He was one of the best friends I ever have had or ever will have. The day of the funeral, my wife, Lois, and I are being honored at a Fellowship of Christian Athletes banquet in Merrillville. We are a very small part of the program, but most of our family already has been invited and I have been an FCA sponsor or co-sponsor at La Porte High for 41 years, the last 29 with my wife.

I was hired as sports editor of the La Porte County Herald-Argus in June of 1965. During the football season that fall I met Blaine, who was volunteering (with no pay or expenses at all) to write stories about New Carlisle High School sports. Because I had no assistant, I was so happy to have one of our strongest circulation areas covered by a person who coached and taught at New Carlisle High School. Blaine always was so conscientious and really cared about the kids.
