Speed has always been Jaden Smallwood’s greatest asset. Like a race car with wonky steering, the Michigan City junior just had to learn how to harness it on the basketball court.
“I started off with the speed, but no skills. I was just stealing the ball everywhere,” Smallwood said of her early days as a player. “In sixth grade, nobody was there to say, you need to be a guard, you need to work on your skills there. Last year, it’s why I couldn’t make most of my layups. My speed helps me a lot, but my feet were going faster than my brain. Sometimes, I still go too fast, but it’s way better this year.”
