New Prairie coach Derek Hicks had runners intentionally leave base early, accounting for all 15 Cougars outs in Thursday’s game with Marquette. The use of the rule allows teams with a big lead to keep the score down and move the game along.

MICHIGAN CITY — Whether it’s a running clock, a scoring cap or a point spread limit, mercy rules exist in nearly all team-based sports in the Indiana High School Athletic Association.

Base running rules allow softball teams to show even more mercy as players can intentionally make outs by leaving the base early.
