Lots of hand wringing over the lack of deer in many hunted spots around here, but it’s really nothing new.

We've been on a decade-long decline in the deer population locally and statewide, due mainly by design of the Indiana Department of Natural Resources. Liberalization of hunting regs — longer seasons (extended firearm dates and 139 days of hunting in Reduction Zones), bigger bag limits and a wider variety of weapons available (crossbows, rifles) — are the main culprits.
